This time of year, we can’t help but notice all the ways in which nature is changing in the world around us. The temperatures drop, the leaves change color, the season transitions.
So often people fear change. We want stability and certainty and yet we are continually called to evolve, change, and grow. Nature demonstrates this to us multiple times a year and we can look to scripture to remind us that this is how things are meant to be, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” Eccl. 3:1
In athletics, as in life, it can be easy to get caught up in the idea that we should always be improving and winning. Yet, like all other things in life there cannot be constant upward growth. There will inevitably be highs and lows in the pursuit of any achievement. To best prepare our students for life and its challenges we must help them understand that whether they are in a cycle of growing and changing, achieving or failing, they are exactly where they are supposed to be. That all of it – including the hardships and failures – is a part of their journey to becoming the person they are called to be.
As I look back on the evolution of our Athletics Department over the course of these past couple of years, I find myself most thankful for the people; the student athletes, coaches, parents, teachers, maintenance crew – all these people make the journey worthwhile. Looking forward, there will inevitably be ups and downs, yet there is no other community I would rather be on this journey with. We will continue to celebrate and highlight the amazing accomplishments and learn from the failures.
Best,
