The Impact of Strong Education

Tammy Yung attended an Ursuline high school—Angela Merici in Louisville, KY—and then graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in Industrial Engineering. She found a job in Dallas at Texas Instruments, met her future husband there, stayed in the area, and began raising a family of three daughters.

Knowing the value of a strong Catholic education from her youth, Tammy decided to get her teaching certificate in math, a field she especially liked, and joined the staff of St. Monica Catholic School. Looking ahead, she really wanted her first daughter Sarah to attend Ursuline and moved to Ursuline Academy to teach math in 2009.

Tammy's High School Experience

In high school at Angela Merici, Tammy learned the difference that teachers can make in the lives of their students, then and beyond school. Math was Tammy's favorite class there, and her Geometry teacher was Sister Sarah, an Ursuline Sister. "She had a way of making problems come to life even though our technology was limited to graph paper and pencils. As an adult, I continue to be inspired by Sister Sarah. I always think of her when I teach my own students trigonometry. I incorporate her words with mine when explaining sine and cosine." And, on an even more personal level, Tammy named her first daughter Sarah.

Gratitude for Exceptional Teachers

Although Tammy was a conscientious and respectful student, she wishes she had expressed her gratitude to her teachers at the time. Her daughters also share gratitude for their exceptional teachers at Ursuline. Each one has felt a special bond with several of the UA faculty. In fact, Tammy says, "They simply would not be the strong and passionate young women of faith that they are today without their teachers' guidance in Band, Choir, History, English, Calculus, Physics, Art, and Theatre."

Tammy and Kevin are grateful to Ursuline for helping them raise three successful daughters.

1. Sarah '10—a graduate of The University of Oklahoma; works for ExxonMobil in Houston

2. Rebecca '12—a graduate of Texas A&M University; in last year of The University of Texas Law School

3. Veronica '18—attends The University of Texas; studying mechanical engineering

Now in a position to give back to her community, Tammy generously supports Ursuline's Employee Legacy Scholarship and also makes unrestricted gifts that support the school's needs as they arise....and "I gratefully do so for all our students today and tomorrow."
