Students Reach Out (SRO), one of the oldest clubs at Ursuline Academy of Dallas, was recently honored by AIDS Services of Dallas (ASD) for its longstanding partnership and service to the organization and its residents.

For many years, SRO students have visited Hillcrest House twice each month to prepare and serve themed dinners for residents living with HIV/AIDS. Today, the club includes more than 160 student members dedicated to building meaningful relationships through service. In addition to hosting dinners, Ursuline students support ASD through the school’s Angel Tree program, and beginning next year, three seniors will complete their senior service work in ASD offices.

The award was presented to Ursuline during the ASD Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, April 23. Gabrielle Merani,  Service Coordinator  & Service-Learning Teacher and SRO moderator, and Marissa Hanback, Admissions Coordinator and SRO Moderator, accepted the recognition on behalf of the school. The award is now displayed in the SRO room on campus.

According to ASD, Ursuline was nominated for its continued support of both the SRO and Angel Tree programs over many years.

For SRO President Adelina L. ‘26, the most meaningful part of the experience has been the relationships formed with residents.

“As president, I have been serving this organization for more than three years, and the best part is getting to make a connection with the residents,” Adelina shared. “I have never met such an amazing and funny group of people.”

She especially remembers one resident, affectionately known as “Dr. Pepper,” whose humor and life stories made a lasting impact on her. “The residents of this house are truly genuine people who make serving the best experience,” she said.

Ms. Merani echoed that sentiment, noting that relationships are at the heart of SRO’s mission.

“The relationships formed with the clients is where the heart of our work is,” she said. “Our girls recognize that and continue to come to SRO despite service hour requirements.”
