Seeking Teamwork

This week, we have the joy and privilege of celebrating both the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I wanted to share a reflection on the importance of teamwork, inspired by the example of Mary.

“There is no I in team” is a phrase that has been around for a long time that we use in sports to emphasize the importance of prioritizing the group versus our own individual needs. In her life, Mary teaches us about community through her openness and trust in God’s plan. At the Annunciation, she said “yes” not only for herself but for all humanity. Successful teams are made up of team members who trust the plan and vision and are willing to fill the role they have been given.

Teamwork requires not only dedication to serving the group but also the ability to build connections and relationships with others. At the wedding in Cana, Mary interceded for others, showing her care and advocacy within the community. Her life reminds us that building relationships begins with listening, empathy, and a willingness to serve.

As we strive to build teamwork within our teams and our Ursuline community, may we all work to demonstrate faith and trust like Mary – trust in one another and in the overall mission and vision of Ursuline Academy of Dallas. May we also strive to respect the uniqueness of the individual and recognize that each person brings gifts that enrich the whole. One person’s gift is not greater than the other; it is in each person doing their part that the team finds success.

When we root our efforts in these ideas, we create not only winning teams but a community that reflects God’s love.
