Esse Receives NCTE Honor

Esse received the highest honor from the National Council of Teachers of English Program, which highlights excellence in student literary magazines.

Ursuline's literary magazine was one of 26 magazines that received the Highest Award. The program, which included 371 entries, encourages schools to develop literary magazines and seek excellence in writing and school-wide participation in production.

The recognized magazines will be on display during NCTE's national conference in November.

"You have inspired a love of writing and built a community around the written word that your students will remember the rest of their lives," said Emily Kirkpatrick, NCTE's Executive Director.

Ursuline's literary magazine already received First Place with Special Merit in the American Scholastic Press Association's annual competition for yearbooks, magazines, and newspapers and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Medal.

Esse 2017 was produced by the Ursuline Literary-Art Magazine Club, which was led by Editor-in-Chief Hannah Ni'Shuilleabhain '17 and Art Editor Miranda Walker '17. Monica Prachyl Cochran '71 and Megan Schott moderated the club.

The issue features a diverse set of work from Ursuline students, including poetry, short stories, plays, photography, a song, and paintings. The works follow the theme of "Memory."
