Katie Mellus Named Head Soccer Coach at Ursuline Academy

Katie Mellus joins Ursuline Academy as Head Soccer Coach and a full-time psychology teacher, bringing an exceptional record of success as both an educator and coach, along with a deep commitment to developing young women as students, athletes, and leaders.

Katie comes to Ursuline from Lake Highlands High School, where she served as Head Girls Soccer Coach and AP Psychology teacher. During her tenure, she led the Wildcats to two 6A District 7 championships, two bi-district championships, and a regional quarterfinal appearance. Her leadership and impact were recognized in the 2023–24 school year when she was named both District 7 Coach of the Year and Richardson ISD Coach of the Year.

Before her time at Lake Highlands, Katie spent more than a decade at Highland Park High School as Head Junior Varsity Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach in the girls soccer program. During that remarkable run, Highland Park advanced to eight regional finals, five state championship matches, and captured state titles in 2017 and 2019.

Katie’s excellence extends well beyond the field. At Highland Park, she served as Social Studies Department Chair and taught AP Psychology, Brain Science, and Health. In 2021, she was recognized as Highland Park High School Teacher of the Year, a testament to her ability to inspire students both in the classroom and through mentorship.

Her coaching experience also includes leadership roles with local club programs Pegasus and Renegades/Athletico, and she holds a U.S. Soccer National Coaching License. In 2017, she was named a National Double-Goal Coach by the Positive Coaching Alliance, an honor that reflects her commitment to building both competitive excellence and strong character in young athletes.

Originally from Michigan, Katie was a four-year scholarship soccer player at Loyola University Chicago, where she earned first-team All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference honors. She went on to earn a master’s degree in Sports Psychology from Miami University (Ohio), where she also served as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s soccer program.

Katie is passionate about helping young women grow in confidence, resilience, and purpose, making her an outstanding addition to the Ursuline community. She is also the proud mother of two daughters, Renna and Cora.
