Congratulations to Teacher of the Year Jeff Girard and Renee Chevallier, this year's Hal and Joann Tehan Award recipient.
The prestigious awards were presented at Ursuline's annual end-of-year luncheon.
The Teacher of the Year is a peer-nominated award for someone who serves as a role model for students and models 21st century learning skills and teaching tools.
Girard, a Jesuit grad, just completed his third year as history teacher and head swimming coach. He is a "conscientious teacher who puts students' well-being first." Another colleague said "he prepares students for the intellectual deep dives they will find in college."
His passion for teaching really stands out in his Inside Nazi Germany class, an elective he created. Girard will also teach church history with Dr. Jason Surmiller next year and is excited to plan an Ursuline summer trip to Germany and Poland. Students will explore and discuss firsthand what they learn in the classroom.
"History is my passion," Girard said. "When I get to talk to the girls about it, it's fun to share."
Girard's wife delivered their second daughter on Tuesday. The growing family enjoys walks and adventures to the zoo. "If our daughters end up half as curious, intelligent, fun, and caring as my students, we would be beyond thrilled as parents. Ursuline students are amazing!" Girard said.
The Tehan Award was established by Hal Tehan to honor a teacher whose life and work demonstrates strong integration of the Ursuline mission.
Chevallier, who just completed her 20th year at Ursuline, is "always ready to assist and share knowledge" through her roles as Librarian and most recently, Archivist. She is "intelligent, dependable, resourceful, and kind – a fabulous role model for students." Another colleague said "she is at the heart and head of educating young women for leadership in a global society."
"I feel very honored to receive this award because this is something my colleagues recognized me for," Chevallier said. "I am very humbled."
In her free time, she enjoys cooking, running, traveling, and reading. Chevallier's daughter, Elyse, graduated from Ursuline in 2011.
