Chem Students Begin Power Systems Unit

Students started a unit on power systems in Chemistry, and used a van de Graaff generator to create static, simulating lightning and that annoying static cling you get in the dryer. A chain of students felt the shock of "grounding" when one of them touched the chain of girls insulated by rubber mats.

When You're Wearing A Buccee's Costume But You've Got A Debate in 4th Period...

Ms. Hibbitt's AP Language and Composition classes had an eventful week before Spring Break! Earlier in the semester, the class read and analyzed Toni Morrison's Nobel Prize speech and George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language." Three classes were spent preparing for a whole-class debate, working in teams to build an argument that the English language is moving in either the right or the wrong direction. In each class, there was also a panel of about three students that worked with both teams as a sounding board, helping them with the process of forming claims, finding evidence, and addressing the opposition.

The debate occurred on the final day of class before Spring Break, which also happened to be the Juniors' "In the Wild" dress theme day for Intramurals. Thus, students were engaged in serious debate (complete with booming opening statements, poignant questions for the opposition answered with well-crafted evidence, and powerful concluding statements crafted in the moment) while dressed up as circus animals.

Understanding Border Changes

Freshmen World History students began their World Wars studies in early March. Students in Ms. Cassetta's class analyzed maps to see how European borders changed before World War I. Each group of students represented a country -- the girls had to sit down or stand up every time the borders changed. Some groups changed position in every round! The class will do a similar activity to understand post-war border changes.

A Night at the Opera

Two Ursuline groups attended the Dallas Opera's production of La Boheme on March 5: Mr. Meyer's History of Music class as a field trip and our Global Advisory Council with the World Affairs Council of DFW. It was a wonderful evening of music and culture! Concertmaster Ami Campbell of the Dallas Opera Orchestra took time after the show to speak with the History of Music students to talk about her career.
