Honoring the Warmth and Wit of Melinda Smith

After 25 years of dedicated service at Ursuline Academy of Dallas, Journalism Teacher Melinda Smith is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, creativity, humor, and grace that has touched generations of students and colleagues.

Throughout her years at Ursuline, Ms. Smith has been far more than a teacher. She has been a mentor, storyteller, colleague, and friend whose joyful spirit and calming presence brought comfort and encouragement to so many within the school community.

For those who know Ms. Smith well, one thing becomes immediately clear: she is, as many describe her, “the warmest hug of a person.” Her kindness, gentle voice, and genuine openness made students and colleagues feel seen, valued, and welcomed from the moment they met her. Even those who may not have worked closely with her often speak about the lasting impression she leaves simply through her warmth and generosity.

Ms. Smith also brought beauty into the Ursuline community in countless ways. From her vibrant outfits and jewelry that brightened every room, to the incredible yearbooks she produced year after year, her creativity helped preserve the spirit and memories of Ursuline for generations of students. Those yearbooks became more than publications; they became treasured keepsakes that captured the joy, friendship, and milestones of student life.

Even during difficult seasons in her own life, Ms. Smith continued showing up for her students and colleagues with strength, determination, and humor. Her resilience and servant heart inspired everyone around her and reflected her deep commitment to this community.

Her wit and humor also became legendary among colleagues. She had a remarkable way of reminding people not to take life too seriously.

Ms. Smith’s impact extends far beyond Ursuline’s campus. One particularly meaningful reminder of her influence came from a former student from J.J. Pearce High School’s Class of 1978, who reached out simply to express gratitude for the mentorship, encouragement, and care she provided decades ago. It is a testament to the kind of educator she has always been and whose impact remains with students long after they leave the classroom.

As Ms. Smith enters retirement, the Ursuline community celebrates not only her years of service but also the countless lives she touched through her compassion, creativity, encouragement, and joyful spirit.

Thank you, Ms. Smith, for the laughter, the wisdom, the memories, the beautiful stories, and the love you so generously shared with this community. While you will be deeply missed on campus, your legacy will continue to live on in the students you taught, the memories you preserved, and the countless people who were blessed to know you.
