Exceptional Years of Service: A Series

The Exceptional Years of Service wall outside of Haggerty Library features Ursuline faculty and staff members who have been employed by The Academy for over 20 years. We are pleased to introduce Ms. Tanya Hamilton.

In the heart of the Counseling Office at Ursuline Academy of Dallas, the spirit of Serviam is alive in quiet moments of listening, small acts of encouragement, and the steady presence of someone who truly cares. For Tanya Hamilton, living out Serviam means meeting students exactly where they are with patience, empathy, and unwavering support.

"Working with students in my role as a counselor, it’s my responsibility to meet them where they are without judgment," Tanya says. "Serviam means being present, offering understanding, and helping them navigate both their struggles and their successes. And in our small team in the counseling office, we jump in to help each other whenever needed. We live that spirit of service every day."

When asked to pinpoint one defining moment that exemplifies Serviam, she responds with grace: “I can’t name just one. Each day at Ursuline is a chance to live it in every conversation with a student, parent, or colleague.”

Among her many memories, two stand out vividly: a 2018 service trip to Uganda and the 2019 graduation of her first advisory group. “Being with those students through all four years, then seeing them walk the stage—it’s something I’ll never forget,” she reflects.

Her advisory groups hold a special place in her heart. “My first group, who graduated in 2019, and my most recent group from the Class of 2025—who affectionately named themselves "Hamletta"—are incredibly special. Getting to walk alongside them for four years, watching them grow, has been a highlight of my time here.”

The landscape of education has shifted dramatically, particularly in the area of student wellness. “One of the biggest changes I’ve seen is how much more receptive our school community is to mental health and wellness services,” Tanya notes. “And of course, the rise of technology has changed how we connect, but it’s also opened new doors for supporting students in meaningful ways.”

When asked how she hopes to be remembered at Ursuline, her answer is both simple and sincere: “I’d like to be remembered as approachable, with a good sense of humor and most importantly, for showing kindness.”

Her quiet, daily acts of service reflect the heart of Ursuline’s mission. In classrooms, in the counseling office, and in the lives of the students she supports, Tanya Hamilton’s legacy is already taking shape, one of compassion, joy, and the everyday grace of Serviam.
