Susan Wing Oglesby '65

After graduating from Ursuline in 1965, Susan received her BA in English and Fine Arts from Spring Hill College in 1969, an MA in Communications from the University of Illinois Springfield in 1971, and a JD, magna cum laud, from Georgetown University Law Center in 1978. She married M. B. Oglesby (“B”) in 1973.

Her professional career began in public relations and advertising with the Illinois Governor’s office in 1969, and continued in Washington DC with the Department of Health Education and Welfare and the White House Council on Wage and Price Stability from 1973 to 1978. After law school, Susan joined the Washington D.C. law firm Hogan & Hartson, where she practiced Communications regulatory law, representing clients including radio and tv stations, telephone and cable companies, and electronic equipment manufacturers. Retiring from the law in 1996, Susan and her husband had a home for 20 years in the small Italian village Monforte d’Alba. They now live in Vero Beach, Florida and Cashiers, North Carolina.

Throughout her professional career and beyond, Susan has been an active volunteer with professional, community and charitable organizations in her Washington, Italy, Florida and North Carolina homes, with a primary focus on children, music and, more recently, the elderly.

Her current activities include serving in Vero Beach on the board of directors of The Learning Alliance, committed to improving elementary school literacy with the ambitious goal of 90% of 3rd graders reading at grade level. Also in Vero Beach, she is on the board of the Senior Resource Association, which is the Meals on Wheels organization in Indian River County, as well as providing senior day care, public guardianship, and senior and public transportation.

In Cashiers, North Carolina, Susan co-founded a community speakers forum, The Hidden Gems, and serves on the board of Vision Cashiers, a community organization which, in this unincorporated village, works with schools, health and safety organizations to augment services that otherwise would be provided by city government. She is also active with the Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau, and the Brevard Music Center, a world-renowned summer music education camp for young musicians’ professional development.

Susan and her husband B are also passionate world travelers, exploring the history, culture and language of diverse destinations — including its roads and restaurants.
