Director of Community and Inclusion


Ursuline Academy of Dallas seeks a Director of Community and Inclusion for the 2021-2022 school year. Founded in 1874, Ursuline Academy of Dallas is an independent Catholic, college preparatory school for young women sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters. The mission of Ursuline Academy is the total development of the individual student through spiritual formation, intellectual growth, service to others, and building of community.

Working with the Principal and her leadership team, the Director will oversee the school’s efforts in community and inclusion. The Director will participate in faculty recruitment, development, and retention, as well as student recruitment and retention, curriculum development, and student life. Since 2016, Ursuline has engaged in work to support community and inclusion across many facets, and the Director will coordinate the multiple works in progress as well as recommend new directions for strengthening community and inclusion at Ursuline in a manner consistent with the Ursuline mission and core values. The Director will have key responsibilities in critical areas of school life, including supporting the School’s Mission and Strategic Roadmap, serving in a leadership capacity as an administrator, supporting faculty and students, collaborating with all other school administrative offices and programs, staying current on research and best practices for community and inclusion in schools, and other duties as directed by the Principal. The Director will continue to move the Ursuline community forward by expanding the School’s strategic focus on creating a culture in which every member has a voice, feels respected and valued, and knows that they belong.

General Authority

The Director will be a member of the School Administration’s leadership team and will provide focused, strategic leadership to sustain and strengthen current diversity initiatives and to develop mindful, innovative school-wide practices and programs in the areas of equity and inclusion in the Context of Ursuline’s Catholic Identity. The Director reports to the Principal, who, in turn, reports to the President.

NOTE: This is a new position for the school. To start, the Director’s time will be allocated 60% to Community and Inclusion initiatives and 40% to duties mutually established by the Principal and the Director. Duties could include teaching two classes or performing other equivalent duties as established. The position may expand to 100% in future years. 

Key Responsibilities and Activities:

The Director is responsible for leading the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion work with all constituencies, both on and off campus.

Mission/Strategic Plan

  • Implement, monitor progress, and recommend adjustments in connection with the Ursuline Academy of Dallas Statement on Community & Inclusion (as approved in fall 2019 and attached on the last page of this description) and the Community and Inclusion Roadmap, both of which provide the strategic framework through which the Coordinator can build the school’s infrastructure for meaningful inclusion of all its community members.
  • Assist the Principal in aligning the school’s practices in the areas of diversity, inclusion, equity and justice with our identity as Catholic school, and a school inspired by the mission, vision, and values of the Ursuline Sisters.
  • Network with other Catholic and independent schools to learn more about best practices around diversity, equity, and inclusion 
  • Leadership
  • Provide general and strategic leadership in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Ursuline.
  • Serve on the school’s administrative team and work with the Principal to develop school policies and initiatives
  • Advance and support the Community and Inclusion Roadmap in collaboration with school leadership
  • Serve on the Board of Trustees Committee and Inclusion Committee
  • Recommend a budget for the support of community and inclusion work at Ursuline, and, once that budget has been approved, monitor that budget
  • Develop recommendations informed by assessment data and best practices to improve the campus climate and educate students, faculty, staff, and other community members around issues of social justice and inclusion
  • Advise the Principal on proactive strategies and practices for recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff
  • Represent the school at local, regional, and national multicultural events as determined in conjunction with the Principal
  • Develop a way for members of the community to share concerns about equity or racism and help ensure appropriate response by those responsible
  • Determine measures of success of our inclusion work, monitor longitudinally, and initiate interventions as appropriate

Faculty and Community Support

  • Serve as a resource for faculty in their work with students and in their development of inclusive curriculum
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Academics and the Academic Council to ensure the academic experience for Ursuline students provides a range of diverse experiences and perspectives
  • Work with the members of the School Administrative team and the Professional Learning Coordinator to provide essential training for faculty and staff to create culturally responsive and inclusive classrooms
  • Develop on-campus workshops focused on teaching adults how to work with all students most effectively and facilitate and ensure faculty professional growth in understanding the role of social and cultural factors in both teaching and learning.
  • Build programming for all constituencies, including students, faculty, parent associations, and current and prospective families on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion

Student Support

  • Act as liaison to and develop strong relationships with the various diversity and inclusion-related groups in the school and respond to diversity- and equity-related issues among the student body as they arise.
  • Oversee student clubs and groups that focus on community and inclusion
  • Develop student leadership in matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Identify and retain speakers, programs, and workshops for students in the domain of diversity, equity and inclusion that align with the needs of the students of Ursuline
  • Develop and deliver Community and Inclusion unit in the Life Skills courses
  • Ensure student access to local and national programs and conferences focused on community and inclusion, such as SDLC
  • Work with the Personal Counselors, the Dean of Academics, and the Dean of Students to track the academic and social progress of students from diverse backgrounds and work with faculty, students, and families to identify and address obstacles to student success that might be associated with differences in cultural or personal identifiers.
  • Work with the Admission Office to help recruit, welcome, and retain students and families from diverse backgrounds as they transition to Ursuline.

Education and Experience/Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Familiarity with independent school culture (Catholic school experience and all-girls school experience highly desired)
  • Secondary school experience preferred
  • Readiness to serve on and contribute to a highly collaborative administrative team
  • Understanding and appreciation of the principles of Catholic social teaching
  • Experience designing and administering community-building, multicultural, diversity and inclusion programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current research, trends and practice in community, diversity, inclusion, and multicultural affairs
  • Ability to develop collaborative relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, and the wider community
  • Strong skills in oral and written communication, deep listening, long-range planning, and program implementation
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize a multitude of tasks by volume, urgency, etc.
  • Strong work ethic and high level of professionalism, discretion, and integrity
  • Able and willing to work a full-time schedule, including frequent evenings and weekends
  • Technologically competent
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual a plus

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Advising a group of 9-11 students
  • Coaching and/or leading extra-curricular activities (related to Ursuline’s C&I work)
  • Weekend responsibilities (related to Ursuline’s C&I work)
  • Public speaking on behalf of the school
  • Teach two classes or equivalent
