Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of its donors, Ursuline Academy is able to provide need-based scholarships to deserving students who qualify for financial assistance. Scholarships are also available to recognize exemplary levels of academic excellence, leadership or service.

The financial need of Ursuline families has increased significantly in the challenging economy of recent years. With growing support, the Academy is making progress in addressing this need. Ursuline's current scholarship endowment is approximately $6.7 million. The school's goal is to increase this endowment to at least $10 million by the end of the decade.

In 2007-08, approximately $858,000 will be awarded in financial assistance and merit awards to 172 young women, approximately 21 percent of the student body.

Four types of scholarships are awarded annually: Financial Assistance Awards, Merit Awards (academic), Special Achievement Awards (leadership and community service), and Alumnae Leadership Awards.

Interested donors may make gifts to scholarships in the following ways:

Mardi Gras Ball
Be a part of it! All proceeds from the annual Mardi Gras Ball go to the Ursuline Scholarship Fund. It is the Academy's largest fundraising event of the year. In 2007, the event raised over $1.2 million for scholarships and faculty endowment.

Endowed Scholarships
Endowed scholarships are established with a single major gift or several donations totaling $50,000, specifically designated as endowed funds. Benefactors of endowed scholarships become members of The John P. Flavin Endowed Scholarship Society. Scholarships from endowed funds are awarded from the dividends earned from investments on the principal amount.

General Scholarship Fund
The Academy receives contributions in various amounts each year for the general scholarship fund. Donations are received as memorials, honorariums, and in honor of birthdays or other special occasions. Some scholarships are received as major gifts to support scholarships as designated by the donor.
