Ursuline Debaters Headed to State 3/7-9

The Ursuline Debate Team is headed to the Texas Forensic Association State Debate Tournament on March 7-9.

Seniors Sydney Malin and Nicki Poinsatte will represent Ursuline in Public Forum Debate, their third trip in as many years. Emily Zagorski ’14 will make her debut at State in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Catherine Buskmiller ’13 will represent Ursuline in the Student Congress Senate and Clairemarie Buskmiller ’15 will compete in Prose Interpretation.

Throughout the season, these five students worked hard to reach the State competition. Sydney Malin and Nicki Poinsatte went undefeated in the preliminary rounds at the Hockaday debate tournament, advancing to the octofinal round and earning the final points necessary to qualify them for the State competition.

Emily Zagorski advanced to the octofinal round at Hockaday in Lincoln Douglas Debate, earning two TFA state qualifying points and the recognition of top speaker in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Zagorski finished up her state qualification with double octos and quarters finishes in the Hastings/Westside swing debate tournament the weekend before Christmas, a quarters showing at Mansfield (where she was undefeated in preliminary rounds), and an octos finish at Coppell (where she also went undefeated in preliminary rounds).

Among the novice team members, Catherine Buskmiller advanced to the finals in Congressional Debate from a huge field at the Colleyville Heritage Debate tournament, while her sister Clairemarie advanced to the semi-finals at the Flower Mound/Marcus swing in her first outing in Congressional Debate. Sophomores Christina Peterman and Olivia McKee rounded out the regular season by going undefeated in preliminary rounds in Novice Public Forum Debate at Colleyville Heritage and advancing to the finals, where they suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 ballot loss to Coppell.

The team members who have earned membership in the National Forensic League will round out the season with an appearance at the NFL District Meet in April.
