Girl Scout Gold Awards 8/12/2010 The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout may earn. A national award with national standards, it represents a Girl Scout's time, leadership, creativity, and effort to make her community better. Five Ursuline students have recently earned their gold awards.

Summer Athletic Achievements 8/12/2010 Congratualtions to Talia Campbell '12 on winning the Dallas Junior Golf Championship on July 16. Read the Dallas Morning News article about the tournament.
Kathleen Bentley '12 was invited to the U.S. Junior National Rowing team sculling development camp in Connecticut in June and competed in a Philadelphia regatta under the U.S. development team banner.

Young Leaders Conference Great Debate 8/12/2010
Congratulations to the students and coaches who participated in the National Hispanic Institute Young Leaders Conference Great Debate in Austin July 29 - August 1. More than half of the team advanced to the single-elimination round. Marcelle Coronel won first place in the Oratory finals, Victoria Eastep and Sara Aranda took all-state honors and most improved in Adjudication. Allison Seager and Brittni Jentz placed second in Adjudication. The team's cultural exhibit placed third. Congratulations to all!

 | Gina Priolo Wins Outstanding Senior Artist Award 6/2/2010 Gina Priolo received the Outstanding Senior Artist Award this year; a $300 purchase award. The school will purchase one of this student’s works to hang in the school. This serves to honor that student and to inspire the younger students.

Miranda Coletta '07 Named UT Goldwater Scholar 5/25/2010 Congratulations to Miranda Coletta '07 who has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship in recognition of her excellence in scientific research. According to the UT press release, "Colletta has worked on developing a process for forming carbon-carbon bonds from alcohols and alkenes that may help minimize toxic waste from industrial processes. She's also done research in the lab of molecular biologist Paul Macdonald, has participated in the college's Public Health Internship Program and has been a teaching assistant in chemistry courses taught by David Laude, associate dean for undergraduate education."

More than 1,000 students, faculty, staff, volunteer leaders, donors and other friends of Ursuline Academy of Dallas gathered today at the school to celebrate the dedication of The French Family Science, Math, and Technology Center – a state-of-the-art learning environment designed to inspire creativity, collaboration, and motivation as the school prepares young women for careers in the sciences, math and world languages. Bear Facts Newspaper Wins Dallas Morning News Award 3/31/2010 At the March 10 Dallas Morning News Day, Ursuline’s on-line paper, The Bear Facts, was selected as Best High School Website in the metroplex, selected from high schools competing in Division B, schools whose enrollment was 1,000 or less. Also, at the luncheon, senior Molly Karol was honored as a finalist in newswriting and senior Laura Chuckray was named Outstanding Staff member. Congratulations!

 | Color Guard Wins National Champion Title 3/29/2010 Congratulations to the Color Guard for the National Champion title! This is Ursuline's first year to have a winter guard which is a color guard that continues onto the winter/competitive season. We attended MA (Marching Auxilaries) Regionals Contest on February 13 in Grapevine, earning the rating of superior and the title of Grand Champions (first place in our category). Additionally we earned a choreography award which was exciting because the officers choreographed the routine unlike many other schools who hire choreographers.

Sarah Yung Receives Computing Award 2/24/2010 Sarah Yung received the “NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing, Texas Affiliate DFW Region.” This award recognizes young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. By generating visibility for these young women in their local communities, the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing encourages continued interest in computing, attracts the attention and support of educational and corporate institutions, and emphasizes at a personal level the importance of women's participation. Sarah is one of just 32 young women selected in the state of Texas and 9 in the DFW Region for this recognition.

 | Ursuline Soccer Wins 20th Straight Title 2/22/2010 Congratulations to the Varsity soccer team on winning its 20th consecutive state title! The Bears defeated Nolan 3-2 in the championship game on Saturday, February 20 in San Antonio. Juliann Jeffrey scored two goals and Natalie Huggins scored the game-winning goal.
In the semi-final game, they defeated Trinity Christian Academy 3-0, with goals scored by Jana Jeffrey, Ashley taken and Ali Alcott.
The Bears are ranked fourth in a national high school soccer ranking. CONGRATULATIONS players and coaches on this outstanding achievement!
The team was undefeated for the season, with a record of 21-0-0.

 | Rangerettes Win Awards in MA Dance Competition 2/20/2010 The Rangerettes competed in the MA Dance competition held in Grapevine on February 13, 2010. The girls performed ten team, officer, and ensemble routines, and six girls danced in the solo competition.

 | Jeffreys to play Soccer at Yale University 2/3/2010 Congratualtions to Juliann Jeffreys '10 who signed a letter of intent to play collegiate soccer at Yale University on February 3, 2010. A four-year player for Ursuline, Jeffreys also plays for the Dallas Texans club and is a member of the under-18 U.S. National Team pool.

Students Raise Funds for Haitian Crisis 1/21/2010 Ursuline students, faculty, and staff raised $4,745.59 for Haitian earthquake survivors through a bake sale and a dress down day on January 21. The money will be donated to Jesuit Refugee Service. Thank you to all who participated in this great expression of Serviam!

Farewell to the Temporary Classrooms 1/18/2010 The temporary classroom buildings are being disassembled now, and will be fully removed by January 24. As time and season permit, the front lawn and the softball field that had been used by the construction companies will be fully restored this spring.

Students Collect More than 46,000 Cans of Food for the Needy 11/19/2009 During the month of November, Ursuline students, faculty and staff collected 46,803 cans for local social service agencies as a part of the annual Intramurals spirit competition. This represents a 100% increase over last year’s total collection of 23,433 cans.

New French Family Science, Math & Technology Center Opens 9/8/2009 After a flurry of last-minute activity and moving, the new French Family Science, Math and Technology Center opened in time for the first day of classes on September 8, 2009. Although some minor work continues, students and faculty are enjoying the new facility. As Maureen Sullivan, Science Department chair said, "It really is a dream come true. We now have space to do our lab work, and the rooms are beautifully designed as well."

Rangerettes Receive Awards at Drill Team Camp 7/30/2009 The Jesuit Rangerette drill team attended the American Dance and Drill Team camp at SMU June 26-28. The team of 26 Ursuline students competed in dance, pom, and marching routines. The Rangerettes, led by captain Brittany Claypool, received the highest number of awards of all the participating teams, including the esteemed Dr. Irving Dreibrodt Marching Award of Excellence for a record-setting score on their final performance. The Rangerettes are directed by Linda Coffin and Danielle Bianchi.

Escamilla named Teacher of the Future 6/18/2009 World Languages teacher Maluza Escamilla has been named as a leader of the National Association of Independent Schools "Teacher of the Future" online community for the 2009-10 school year. She is one of 25 teachers from around the country who will seed and moderate an online discussion forum and post short educational videos in NAIS’s new teachers’ community and on TeacherTube.
"Maluza works tirelessly and takes many initiatives in her teaching," said Cecilia Nipp, Dean of Diversity and Global Education. "We congratulate her on earning this distinction."

Summer Service 6/18/2009 Serviam is a part of life for Ursuline students and faculty. Students will travel to Honduras on the diocesan mission trip, to Notre Dame University for the ND Vision conference, and to Kenya to build a school and work on a water project, among many other things. With championships in Cross Country, Soccer, Crew, Golf, Tennis, and Track & Field, and Softball’s first district title in many years, it was a good year for the Bears. African Businesswomen Visit UA 6/16/2009 On May 28, a distinguished delegation of eight women from seven African
countries visited the Academy as a part of the State Department’s
International Visitor Program. They were on a multi-state visit to
promote U.S-Africa trade and women in leadership, hosted locally the
World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth.

 | Students Participate in Relay for Life 6/3/2009 More than 50 members of the Class of 2011 participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on April 18 at Greenhill School. They raised $350 for cancer research at the all-night event.

Faculty Receive Year-End Awards 5/29/2009 On May 29, at the annual employee appreciation luncheon sponsored by the Parents’ Association, members of the faculty and staff were recognized for outstanding years of service. Melanie Bolling of the Theology Department received the Tehan Award for teaching excellence and Frank Bauroth of the English Department received the Teacher of the Year Award.

 | Graduation: 135th Commencement Ceremonies 5/24/2009 Commencement ceremonies for the 135th Graduating Class of the Ursuline Academy of Dallas were held on Sunday, May 24, 2009, at the Ursuline campus on Walnut Hill Lane in Dallas. The Academy is pleased to announce the class valedictorian, co-salutatorians, National Merit Scholars, military academy appointee, and students receiving merit scholarships from colleges they plan to attend. The Class of 2009 has been awarded nearly $9 million in scholarships; of the 186 graduates, 62% (115 young women) have received four-year merit scholarships from colleges and universities across the U.S. View photos from the ceremony and behind the scenes.

UA Soccer Player Named 2008-2009 Gatorade Texas Girls Soccer Player of the Year 5/21/2009 In its third decade of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in partnership with ESPN RISE, announced on May 12, 2009 Alina Garciamendez-Rowold of Ursuline Academy as its 2008-2009 Gatorade Texas Girls Soccer Player of the Year. Garciamendez-Rowold is the second Gatorade Texas Girls Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Jordan Walker was the first from Ursuline honored with this award in 1998-1999.

 | Crew wins HS Nationals 5/16/2009 CONGRATULATIONS to the Varsity quad on winning the High School National Championship at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta
in Philadelphia! This is a first for Ursuline Crew and a tremendous
honor. The champions are: Emily Andrews, Sylvia Fox, Claire Riggins,
and Allison Sterling.
The Varsity double of Sarah Seifrick and Stephanie Meals placed 5th in the final, also a big honor and a first for UA Crew.
The quad will bring home the Ruth Robinhold Trophy, which has been won for
the past three years by Conestoga High School of Pennsylvania. Mrs.
Robinhold, now 94, was on hand to present the trophy to the girls. She
was a pioneer in women's rowing, having helped to found the Philadelphia Girls' Rowing Club
in 1938. This organization was the first to allow girls and women to
row on the Schuylkill River. Mrs. Robinhold took time to visit with
each of the UA rowers and was very interested in learning more about
Ursuline.

Bear Facts receives American Scholastic Press Association award 5/11/2009 The Bear Facts staff recently received a first place award from the American Scholastic Press Association for its excellence among high school newspapers. American Scholastic Press Association also awarded Bear Facts Editor Kristen Stoutenburgh a certificate for Outstanding Service to the Community based on her series of articles, “Angels Among Us.”
Several members of the newspaper staff attended Dallas Morning News High School Journalism Day in April where the paper was recognized for its excellent quality, and Kristina Ferguson was awarded honorable mention for her writing of reviews. Kristen Stoutenburgh was honored as “Most Valuable Staffer.”

 | Spring Fine Arts Festival Awards 5/5/2009 The annual Spring Fine Art Exhibition was held April 20 - May 1. The distinguished juror was Juergen Strunck, professor of art at the University of Dallas. Mr. Strunck conferred 57 awards totaling $1,700 at an awards reception on April 23 in Haggar Center.

Senior Service Mondays 3/26/2009 Members of the Class of 2009 concluded their second and third quarter "Senior Service Mondays" placements on March 9. They served at more than 40 agencies throughout the Dallas area, including at a nursing home, homeless shelter, in classrooms, and at hospitals.

Sophomore wins grand prize at science fair 3/26/2009 At the recent Beal Bank Regional
Science & Engineering Fair in Dallas, Madeleine Ball ’11 won the grand prize, first prize – Animal Science, the US Army
award for most outstanding life science project, first Prize – Dallas
County Veterinary Medical
Society. Maddie will receive an $18,000 dollar scholarship to SMU. Her project centers around
researching the bacteria that causes cholera.

 | Students participate in Shelton ethics symposium 3/26/2009 Six students attended the 12th annual Ethics Symposium on Friday, March 6 at Shelton School. Students participated in interactive ethical decision-making activities and discussed moral and ethical issues challenging the world today. The Ursuline sophomores who participated were: Abby Keeble, Atalo Brandao, Amanda Rivera, Elyse Chevallier, Emily Lopez, and Hannah Walker.

Edible Car Contest at Texas Woman’s University. Three Ursuline teams
participated in the contest, creating vehicles out of rice paper,
pasta, and other entirely edible materials.

Great Debate team. The Summer School course, Leadership and Debating in

 | Mardi Gras 2009 - A Grand Success! 3/25/2009 Mardi Gras 2009 was truly “An Evening of Grand Gestures”, with net proceeds of more than $390,000 for the Ursuline Scholarship Fund. In addition, the event recognized new gifts and pledges totaling $275,000 for endowed scholarships.

 | Soccer wins 19th straight title 2/21/2009 Congratulations to the Ursuline Soccer team on winning its 19th straight TAPPS 5A State Championship title! The Bears won 2-1 vs. Nolan in the championship game in San Antonio on February 21. Both Ursuline goals were scored in the first half by Sophie Campise. Great job Bears!

 | Students raise money for Kenyan girls school 2/19/2009 Ursuline students, faculty and staff raised nearly $1,000 in small change during "penny wars" which took place during Catholic Schools Week, January 26-30. The money will be sent to help pay school fees for students in St. Catherine's girls school in Kenya.

 | Sophomore Serviam Mass 2/13/09 2/16/2009 On February 13, the members of the Class of 2011 received their Serviam pins in a special Mass at the Academy. Molly O'Brien was the recipient of the Ursuline Mothers' Club Beth Rayfield Memorial Challenge Award. Emily Candee '03 was the featured speaker.

story of a serene village in the heather-strewn hills of Scotland where
the worries and evils of modern life are left far behind. Look on a map and you
won't find it. Look in your heart and there it will be. Enchantment is a place

 | Bishop, Catholic High School Heads Meet at Ursuline 1/21/2009 Sr. Margaret Ann Moser, O.S.U. invited heads of local Catholic high schools for “Lunch and Conversation” on Wednesday, January 21. Bishop Kevin Farrell and Sr. Gloria Cain (Superintendent of Diocese schools) joined the group for lunch. The group plans to meet every few months.

Australian Basketball Teams Play at UA 12/17/2008 Two club basketball teams from Melbourne, Australia visited Ursuline on December 16. The UA Varsity won a close game 35-32, and the JV lost 46-37. The Australian team, called Craigieburn, finished in the top 20 in Australia in 2008. The international games were followed by a barbecue.

 | Peggy Coleman receives Work of Heart Award 12/17/2008 Mathematics teacher Peggy Coleman is one of the latest recipients of the Catholic Foundation's Work of Heart Award. As a part of the honor, she will receive a $500 grant for personal use. Congratulations to Ms. Coleman!

 | Project Angel Tree 12/17/2008 Ursuline students, faculty and staff collected more than 300 Christmas gifts for people served by the City of Dallas Child Protective Services (teenage girls), The Association for Independent Living, and AIDS Services Dallas. Ornaments listing what each recipient would like for Christmas are hung on the tree and selected by members of the Ursuline community. Senior Jordan Snyder selected four ornaments from the tree. "It was meaningful for me to buy the gifts each person wanted. I know that some of them wouldn't have a Christmas without our help." Some advisory groups pooled their resources to buy larger gifts for their "angels". Thank you to all who gave so generously to this year's project!

 | Robotics Team Takes Third Place 10/30/2008 Congratulations to the members of the Robotics team who placed third overall and first in the video category at the annual Dallas BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) Game Day at the University of Texas at Dallas, October 25. The robot, named "Amelia," after Amelia Earhart, will now advance to Texas BEST Game Day on November 15.

 | Bears Win Cross Country State Meet! 10/18/2008 The Ursuline Cross Country team regained their state cross country title by placing first overall at the appropriately named Bear Run course in Waco. Senior Melanie Wilcox led the charge placing third overall, followed by freshman Becca Knott in fourth only three seconds behind.

 | Junior World Affairs Council attends Thomas Friedman Lecture - 9/12/08 9/18/2008 Ursuline students were among other members of the DFW Jr. World and World Affairs Council gathered to hear acclaimed journalist and author Thomas Friedman who spoke at a September 12 Council luncheon about his new book, Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution and How It Can Renew America. The students were: June Chang ’12, Sylvia Fox ’10, Erin Gleim ’10, Lee Weiland ’10, Priya Thomas ’10, Priyanka Thomas ’10, and Rebecca Schwarz ’12.
